Prosciutto Sandwich

A fresh, simple Prosciutto Sandwich is the perfect lunch to enjoy with your bowl of soup! The classic salty, savory flavor of the ham paired with crunchy bread and a creamy element is simply the best! And best of all, it takes very little effort to make.

Two open faced proscuitto sandwiches on a wooden cutting board with a bowl of avocado to the side.

An Italian prosciutto sandwich is the perfect pairing for a light lunch dinner, and you can serve it in different ways depending on what you’re craving. I also love a version of this sandwich with peppery arugula greens, a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic, and fig preserves. Yum!

If you want an even more satisfying meal, add a cozy soup alongside the sandwich. Try a bowl of cucumber gazpacho in the summer and this creamy bean soup in the winter with your next prosciutto di parma sandwich.

Why This Prosciutto Sandwich Rocks!

  • Ready in Less than 15 Minutes: The convenience factor is a big reason why I love this sandwich with prosciutto so much. It’s very easy to make!
  • Works Well as an Appetizer or Meal: You can serve this prosciutto and cheese sandwich as an easy appetizer or you can pair it with your favorite bowl of soup for a heartier meal.
  • Versatile: The topping possibilities are nearly endless when it comes to prosciutto. Sweet fruit complements like fig and pear go beautifully with it, and so does the acidity of balsamic vinegar. And of course, the cheese! All the cheese!

Ingredients + Substitutions

Ingredients to make prosciutto sandwich on a wooden cutting board on the table.
  • Avocado: Freshness is key for making the best prosciutto sandwich. When possible, I like to buy my ingredients at a local farmer’s market. The creaminess of the avocado pairs well with the saltiness of the prosciutto.
  • Garlic: All you need is one clove to add to the avocado spread.
  • Fresh Lemon Juice: A squeeze of fresh lemon adds a bright lift to the avocado spread.
  • Olive Oil: For the avocado spread and for drizzling over the bread before you toast it.
  • Bread: Any type of your favorite bread will work, white, wheat, baguette, sourdough, or ciabatta are all popular.
  • Prosciutto: Prosciutto is a dry-cured ham known for its delicate, paper-thin slices. The crudo variety is the most common in the U.S. You can easily find it in the deli section and many stores have extra selection during the holiday season when charcuterie boards are popular.
  • Cottage Cheese: I love using cottage cheese for a healthy and light option but you could also sub any creamy cheese like fresh mozzarella, burrata, brie, provolone, Parmigiano-Reggiano, goat cheese, or gorgonzola.
  • Toppings: You can use so many different toppings! Black and white sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, everything bagel seasoning, and fresh parsley are delicious here.

How to Make a Prosciutto Sandwich

This simple sandwich recipe only takes a few minutes to make.

Avocado blended in a food processor bowl.

Step 1: Make the Avocado Spread. Combine the avocado, garlic, lemon juice, salt, and olive oil in the food processor and blend until smooth. If it's too chunky, add a tablespoon of water and blend again.

Two pieces of bread toasting in a skillet.

Step 2: Toast the Bread. Heat a teaspoon of olive oil and toast the bread until it's perfectly golden and crispy on each side.

Cottage cheese and avocado on two pieces of bread.

Step 3: Top the Bread. Spread the cottage cheese over each slice of bread, then spoon some of the avocado mixture over it.

Step 4: Finish with Prosciutto. Layer the prosciutto and sprinkle on fresh parsley and sesame seeds. Perfection!

Handy Tip - Try It With Melon!

Try a prosciutto sandwich with very thinly sliced cantaloupe or honeydew melon for a crisp and refreshing version in the summer when melon is in season!

Dietary Modifications & Variations

  • Classic Italian Flavors: Pair prosciutto with buffalo mozzarella, tomato, and basil on a slice of airy ciabatta bread. This version reminds me of a caprese salad.
  • Add an Egg: Swap the cottage cheese for burrata or mozzarella and top with a fried egg makes for an unforgettable brunch pairing or a hearty breakfast.
  • Sweet or Savory: Add a schmear of fig jam for a bit of sweetness or some pesto if you prefer more savory flavors.
  • Mini Sized: Swap the large bread and instead toast up baguette slices in the oven until crisp and then top with the avocado mixture, cottage cheese, and prosciutto. This works great if you want to serve them as an appetizer for your main meal.
  • Herby Mayo Addition: The classic Italian way of serving this sandwich does not include mayo, but I’ve tried it with a fancy brand of mayonnaise and fresh rosemary, thyme, and cracked black pepper and it is yummy!

Toppings & Serving Suggestions

These sandwiches are great as a quick and easy lunch or as a simple appetizer before a holiday gathering or party. If you want to make a full dinner out of them, just add sides and dessert!

  • Especially in the winter, this sandwich goes well with a cozy bowl of soup. Serve it with turkey and wild rice soup or some creamy potato soup.
  • Impress friends and family by serving this as a beautiful appetizer as is or opt for pretzel buns instead!
  • Change the ingredients based on what's in season. In the summer, add some juicy tomatoes or thinly sliced melon is so good. In the winter, you can add some fig jam or honey mustard, and thinly sliced pear.
  • I've also served this as a full dinner with a bowl of Tuscan white bean soup, roasted broccoli and cauliflower, and cannoli or tiramisu from the local Italian bakery. Divine!

Expert Tips

  • Eat Them Fresh: I don’t recommend storing these as leftovers and they don’t freeze well. Freshly made is best, plus they won’t last long anyway!
  • Thinly Sliced: Make sure when you order your prosciutto at the deli that they slice it ultra thin! It's the best this way.
  • Drizzle with Balsamic: This is especially amazing with some balsamic syrup drizzled over the top or a high quality balsamic that's a bit thicker. It's naturally sweet and so good!
